San Andreas Regional Center held its 25th Annual “Service above Self” awards dinner on Saturday, October 28 in San Jose, which recognizes
those who go Above and Beyond in contributing to the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Two of our own were awarded Recognition of Merit Awards.

  • Jill Escher is former board member, former President of the San Francisco Bay Autism Society, founder of the National Council on Severe Autism, national thought leader and dear friend who was nominated as Volunteer of the Year for her tireless work on behalf of our community. She was joined at the event by her teen aged daughter, Sofia.
  • Kevin “Boss Man” Everett has been with us since he was 10 years old. For the last 25 years, he has been our summer janitor and faithfully swept and mopped our dining hall after each meal. He also kept our restrooms clean and ensured that our many outdoor trash cans clean and ready for more refuse. Boss Man always has a smile and happy greeting for everyone. Congratulations, Kevin.

Kevin was chauffeured to the event by Katie Giampa, former Camp Director and Ben Kwong, winner of Counselor of the Year award at Camp Krem, year after year, Both are still active in supporting people with special needs. Mark and Nancy Hildebrand have been friends with Kevin and drove from Mt. Madonna to celebrate Boss Man’s award.

We were especially honored by Assemblymember Gail Pellerin who graced us with her company, and who has long been a friend of those with special needs. Thank you, Gail, for supporting our worthy mission.

A good time was had by all, and we were pleased to continue being recognized by SARC. These honors followed many we have received in the past from SARC, including Service Provider of the Year (Camp Krem) and special recognition of Christina Krem, as Employe of the Year.

Let’s see what next year has in store for us and the many good people who support our efforts.
